We live in an age of fast food and fast living. As we find less time for ourselves in our daily lives our diet becomes geared more towards convenience than good living – and our bodies are suffering. With many millions of pounds spent on laxatives and stomach remedies every year in the UK and pro-biotic foods regularly advertised on our television screens, intestinal health has never been seen to be more important.

Colonic therapy, or colonic irrigation, has a long history dating as far back as 1500BC where it was mentioned in an Egyptian medical artifact known as the Eber Papyrus. Evidence has also been found of its use even earlier in China and India where it was practiced as part of ritual cleansing of the body. Hippocrates, Pare and Galen also advanced the use of enema therapy.

More recently Dr John Harvey Kellogg, M.D., founder of the Kellogg cereal company, did much to promote the benefits of colonic health and many credit him for the popularity of colonics as part of mainstream medical practice in the first half of the 20th century. Kellogg was frequently asked to lecture on colon therapy and recommended colonics for many conditions, such as depression and arthritis. Whilst the importance of bowel health has never been disputed, as the use of laxatives grew in popularity during the latter half of the 20th century there was a decline in the popularity of traditional treatments.

However, as people become aware of the complications associated with laxative misuse (such as chemical imbalances, addiction and cramping) and with the revival of natural medicine, it has become enormously popular again with everyone from Royalty to A-list celebrities seeking colonic therapy for detox and to improve health and well being.

Many common questions about Colonic irrigation are answered on our Common questions page but please contact us if you would like further information.
